Thalassophile
2022. Enamel, 22kt gold leaf & awabi shell inlay on glass
950mm framed in Tas oak
'Thalassophile' is for the lovers of the sea. The artist Annie Rudduck, an openly proud Thalassophile, presents a trichromatic exploration of nautical motifs and oceanic flora & fauna endemic to the South Australian coastal regions. Indigo, white and gold leaf stir feelings of distant Mediterranean daydreaming and the endless possibilities floating beyond the horizon.
The closer your look, deeper themes connected to our wider environment can be seen shimmering below the surface; escapism, consumption and the state of the natural world. Mirrored gold elements allow for the viewer to experience metaphoric (and literal) self reflection during their own journey through the narrative.
Rudduck has developed a contemporary and intricate approach to traditional verre églomisé gilded signage. The encasing nature of her glass pieces is a highly original style that leaves audiences equal parts captivated and perplexed.
